Raising Readers opens the world of literacy to our youth

RABC CANADA Family Literacy Day¸ is a national initiative that promotes the importance of reading and learning together as a family. Every year, on January 27, families and communities across Canada celebrate this special day at literacy themed events coordinated by literacy organizations, schools and libraries. Thousands of children and families will be participating in family literacy events and activities across Canada on Family Literacy Day.

In Riverdale where better to celebrate Family Literacy Day, but at Raising Readers located at 493 Carlaw Avenue. It's a cozy location warmed by a friendly mural of Where the Wild Things Are by local artist Jason Rouleau. On January 27, there will be family reading time from 10am until 2pm, followed by a cartoon workshop for school-aged children from 2 pm - 4pm.
Raising Readers is a registered charity that started in May 2006 and now reaches over 200 local families. Reading circles are held

for children from ages of 3 - 12 where they have borrowing access to a library of quality literature in a variety of genres. There are also story time groups for parents with babies and toddlers to meet other young families in our community.
Founder and director, Michelle Kadarusman is trained in early childhood education at George Brown College and has been running a day care for preschool and school age children since 2001. Michelle's passion for children's books and love of teaching through reading and literature, along with many years of volunteering in children's literacy programs in public schools, led to the birth of Raising Readers.
“I had the idea to begin a not-for-profit organization that would act as a kind of a supporting bridge between the reading programs offered in schools and what is available in the public libraries. Our public systems cannot always provide the hours and enthusiasm that is required to spark and sustain a child's interest in becoming a reader, and that is what I truly hope Raising Readers will do for many children.”
